About WMTC and what you’ll learn

Wilderness Medicine Training Center’s WFA courses are an introduction to wilderness expedition medicine, focusing on general concepts and basic treatment skills. Many WFA graduates return to take a longer, more intensive course. The certification also meets American Camping Association and Scouts of America trip leader requirements. People with current WAFA, WFR, & WEMT certifications from approved providers can recertify via WFA and online testing. Learn more about recertification.

Highlights of the WFA

  • Basic Life Support Lab: Addresses all elements of the Scene size-up and Initial Patient Exam.

  • Adult & Child WCPR/AED Skills Lab: Obstructed airway, Adult & Child Wilderness CPR, and AED instruction, manikin practice, and certification.

  • Basic Extremity Splinting Lab

  • Wound Cleaning Lab: Pig’s feet are used for training realistic wound cleaning.

  • Focused Spine Assessment Lab: How to assess and rule out possible spine injuries in a wilderness context.

  • Injection Lab: Hands-on instruction in injectable epinephrine required for the treatment of anaphylaxis.

  • Spine Management Lab: Lifting, moving, and packaging potentially spine-injured patients on their back and side in a commercial and/or improvised litter, and in an improvised stretcher.

  • Improvised BLS Hypothermia Packaging Lab: Sleeping bags, pads, tarps or plastic sheeting, and water bags/bottles are used to improvise a BLS hypothermia package.

  • Simulations: Role plays incorporating patient assessment & documentation. Make-up is used to increase the reality of traumatic simulations.

Where you’ll stay

Wilderness Trails rests along the Snake River in the Bridger Teton National Forest, mere miles from Yellowstone’s South Gate. Our well-appointed base camp features comfortable wall tents (with real beds), a fully stocked kitchen, forty head of horses and mules, and immediate access to both Yellowstone and the Teton Wilderness.

Enjoy mornings in our beautiful camp with hot coffee and freshly prepared country breakfasts. Wind down with western dinners cooked over the fire. Hearty lunches and snacks ensure you never go hungry.

The camp offers reliable cell for Verizon subscribers but AT&T can be spotty. Limited WIFI connectivity is available. Charge small electronic devices off our solar system.

You are welcome to arrive the June 13th so you are rested and ready for the WFA to begin on the morning of June 14th. All meals and lodging from the evening of June 13th to the morning of June 17th are included in your tuition.

Inquire for pricing on staying in one of our wall tents with queen beds and full sheeting.
